Spring Trends to Refresh Your Home

CTG_insert3A_PRINT

Spring is a time of awakening, when nature takes a moment to yawn and stretch after a long cold winter then promptly gets to work on a gorgeous makeover. Snow gives way to mud, then soft green grass, and bare branches come to life with yellow green buds and fragrant blossoms. Birds come home from their Southern vacations and tulips burst forth to greet everybody. Take a cue from the world outside, cheerfully unfurling a fresh new look, and rejuvenate your home. Here are 5 ways to use this years home decor trends inside to create an invigorating new look in your home.

Prints: Flower Power

Floral home decor trends spring 2014

Florals never really go out of style, they just take on new tendencies, and especially in the Springtime flowers are destined to be forever chic. This year, watercolor florals have emerged as a beautiful trend, bringing a soft, hand-painted beauty to prints. Graphic pixelated florals are also a la mode, creating a neoteric interpretation of the traditional blossom for a modern flair.

Fabrics: Lace

Carte Blanche 2014 home decor trend lace

Spring is the time to let some light in and lace is the perfect peek-a-boo airy and light fabric to renew the romance of a room for the new season! Lace has been trending on runways and has a long history of high fashion. A quick fix for any room is to swap out your curtains with sheer lacy ones. Even with the blinds raised, the lace will provide privacy while allowing you to enjoy naturally refracted sunlight through a poetic mesh. Lace on a table has a similar effect, bringing a whimsical and feminine touch to the room.

Colors: Pastels

pastel 2014 home decor trend

Pastels have transcended Easter decorations and 1950s kitchen appliances and have emerged as completely chic. Soft pinks, precious peach, lemon creams, milky mint, powdery purple and opaline turquoise hues are gracing everything from furniture to pottery and pillows. These delicate and midtone palettes add an ultra pretty focal point to a room that is soothing to the eye and quite fresh. Try upcycling a chair or side table with a delightful new paint, or choosing an accessory like a mixer or vase with an unexpectedly pale and pretty tint.

Finishes: Brass and Mixed Metallics

Metallic finishes are dazzling homes this year, lending a burnished beauty to all kinds of surfaces including lamps, wall art, furniture and accessories. Brass, and copper, in particular, have emerged as favorites for home decor, providing a chic focal point to add ambiance and reflect the light of the room. Don’t let anybody tell you that gold and silver clash, either. Mixed metals is sophisticated and cutting edge, gilding your home with a luxurious twinkle.

Vintage Love Affair

Vintage Style Home Decor Trend

Flea market-chic decor is a captivating style, creating a cultured and funky style. Vintage prints, items with nostalgic symbolism, and heirlooms with stories to tell lend a rich historical sophistication to your home, making a unique statement. Vintage is certainly en vogue, even in contemporary spaces we are seeing statement pieces from bygone eras adding interest and originality.

Here are a few of our observations from the halls and runways this year.

Spring 2014 Color Trends for home Decor

Decor Color Trends 2014

Decor Color Trends 2014 as Observed by our Creative Director Paula Berberian at Maison et Objet

Colors! Pantone are the color authorities and our go-to resource for color trends. This year the color of the year for 2014 is Radiant Orchid and we have already seen the hue start to take off in everything from pillows to jewelry, wall decor, and clothes. Striking an equilibrium with the imaginative purple hue, pretty pastels like hemlock green, placid blue and soft violet are balanced with dazzling blue with a cobalt tendency, celosian orange, freesia yellow and cayenne red. Sand and paloma grey bring thoughtful neutrals to the mix for a sophisticated poise. We were certainly seeing a lot of orange on the runways at FWNY last week, as well as delicate blushing pinks and purples and olive greens with plenty of black, grey, cream and white. Walking the halls of Maison, pink was the belle of the ball. Deep coral pink tones, as well as mid-tone pink pastels were gracing home decor products across the boars. Mid tone pastels including sage, yellow and pale blues were also popular, in addition to plenty of timeless taupes, beige and grey neutrals.

Prints! Western prints and themes have been picking up traction. We have been seeing more antlers and quirky taxidermy influences in decor, as well as global versions of Southwestern prints. Think Ralph Lauren American cabin inspirations, with plaids, checks and ropes as well as animal pelts. Dhurries, colorful area rugs indiginous to India, were prevalent, layering floors with a mix of worldly patterns and contemporary prints. We are also seeing a lot of Tropicana inspirations like pink flamingos, bananas and palm trees. Subtle retro looks that have been simplified for a sophisticated, modern appeal are everywhere. In the same category, Geometrics reminisce on the 80′s, but with a fresh perspective. Flower prints took on a pixelated, blurry look for a futuristic yet pretty effect. Baroque influences were also evident across all sorts of home decor looks. Cultured, ethnic inspirations are still very much in. Beautiful blooming florals, watercolor florals and elegant textures were prevalent, as well as traditional designs with new techniques.

Building Materials, Textiles and Finishes: brass was plentiful, and gold, as well as heaps of copper and dark metals, along with feathers, wood, and stone, including marble and agate and chunky knits. Painted furniture is chic. Innovative DIY types are upcycling pieces that may have gone unnoticed with fresh colors. This trend has emerged way beyond white, with bright turquoise, chartreuse, yellow and bubblegum pink reinventing even the plainest of jane furniture into desirable pieces.

More Notable Trends: Accessories, especially lamps, were designed with soft faceted angles, like cut gems with obscure shapes. Pendant lamps continued to grow in popularity, now in even more colors. Wallpaper, including graphic designs, geometrics, glamour prints and trompe l’oeil effects like marble were taking walls to new levels of captivation. Dimensional accent effects like beads, sequins, and raised inks were also popping up on walls and textiles for a heightened interest in decor. Typography and graphic branding design, like retro neon signs, ironic logos and street-smart snowboarding and skateboarding graffiti style words were featured on the runways and in decor, too.

Spring 2013 Trends from Paris to Refresh Your Home

Sharing the Latest Fashion Trends From Maison & Objet

A gentle Metallic wallpaper with traditional beauty

“April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom, holiday tables under the trees,” said the popular song lyricist E. Y. Harburg.  Many dream to see “Paris in the springtime,” the much-lauded phrase that captures a favorite time to visit.  However if travel to the City of Lights isn’t on the calendar this spring, another way to learn about its sophistication, style and latest trends is to read up on Maison & Objet, Europe’s largest home design exhibition held earlier this year. Paula Berberian, Creative Director of Brewster Home Fashions, one of the oldest independent, family-owned wallpaper companies in the U.S. scoured the enormous show searching for the latest trends and reports back here with four that can easily be incorporated into your décor.

1. Pastels

Pale Pastel Pink Vintage Rose Cameo

“While Pantone named Emerald Green the color of the year, it appeared that 1950’s sugary pastels were evident and making headway,” says Berberian.  “A hue I especially saw around the halls was a very soft pink that was commonly paired with taupes and black and white, along with a soft yellow, seen most often with grey.”

Whether in the popular pink, the new hot pistachio pastel, subtle watery blues, or in other soft marshmallow hues, the trend is certainly on time for spring.  This palette is beautifully captured in Kenneth James’ Club by Eijffinger® line in the Yellow Geo Square Stripe pattern.  It features always fashionable vertical stripes in pink and yellow.  The design’s pastel pairing produces a look that’s both soft and sophisticated.

2. Geometric

“There is a lot of financial uncertainty in the world right now” says Berberian.  “Many companies are taking a conservative approach with regards to product introductions taking a deep breath and not wanting to take risks.”  Berberian thinks this may be the reason why there are a lot of subdued modern interpretations of classic prints, such as a refreshed floral or damask.

“Geometric and modern designs were still a favorite but I, along with my colleagues, concluded that there weren’t any drastically new designs.  Overall designers and manufacturers are playing it safe,” concludes Berberian.  For a colorful improved classic, the Decadence’s Harira Purple Moroccan Trellis by Decorline features a classic trellis revived in silver and purple.   Wow guests upon arrival by adding this wallpaper in a foyer.  Its large-scale bright print is as cheerful as it is inviting, and by adding the design to an entryway, it also helps to set the overall decorating style and mood of a home.

3. Nature Inspired

Kenneth James Grasscloth Wallpaper from the Shangri La Collection

“This year’s show confirmed that the natural and artisanal is a trend with staying power,” says Berberian.  “With a universal shift to more eco-friendly home décor, hand-crafted wooden pieces, even furnishings dyed with vegetable color, such as in a popular citrusy lime green, were prevalent.”

While the organic look was captured in wooden furniture from Scandinavian, Dutch and German to Italian designers, this texture can easily be captured in wallpaper as well.  For an eco-friendly wallcovering and one that instantly adds an organic feel to a space, the Fine Bamboo natural grasscloth wallpaper in the nature-inspired ShangriLa collection by Kenneth James is an ideal addition.  Its silky Kong Tawny Grasscloth in a warm spiced cider hue infuses warmth in any space, not to mention putting the “eco” in “eco-chic,” as the wallpaper is made of a fine bamboo harvested in Asia, making it 100 percent sustainable.

4. Warm Metals

Just as colors were softened at the exhibition, so were the metallic accents.  Rose gold, pink copper and yellowy brass finishes, both matte and highly-polished, were on-hand.  In furnishings, the metals were often paired with dark woods like walnut, ceramics and marble and, as Berberian attests, were also seen on walls.

“Metallic-accented wallpaper was a constant at Maison, which serves as an affirmation that we’re on-trend,” says Berberian.  “We offer various wallpaper designs enhanced with metallic foils along with shimmer overlays and other embellishments.”  One such wallpaper includes the Kenneth James’ Zircon by Eijffinger® collection that offers stunning glimmering accents such as in pattern number 317073 that features an intricate metallic gold lace print on a fresh sky blue background.  The delicate wallpaper can transform any dull office or bedroom with neutral furniture into a sparkling, jewel box space.

Get your Paris fix, at least when it comes to getting its latest styles, with these on-trend designs from Brewster Home Fashions.
