DIY Project: Wallpaper on Stair Risers!

Alternate wallpaper designs for an exceptionally unique touch

From black and white prints to the more vibrant and colorful, adding a beautiful pattern to stair risers is an easy way to bring stylish detail to the interior of your home. With numerous ways to express your own individual design style, this is the perfect time to allow those creative juices to flow! Whether you choose a pretty floral print for a more romantic and girly feel or instead opt for a chic geometric for that dash of modern flavor, this simple DIY project will truly make a statement in your home as well impress those around you by showing off your artistic talents!

Project Tools:

  • 1 roll of wallpaper prepasted or unpasted (2 rolls+ if you are looking to alternate designs as seen in the picture above)
  • 1 can of acrylic wallcovering primer
  • 1 can of wallpaper paste/adhesive (if using unpasted wallpaper)
  • 1 quart of matte gloss or gloss clear acrylic
  • Household cleaner & sponge
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Wallpaper sponge/brush
  • Smoothing tool
Stairway on a luxury house interior

Before & After: Bare white stairs transformed into a lovely new décor statement

Project Directions:

  1. With your ruler, measure each stair riser separately as each stair could vary in size.
  2. Using your pencil, trace out each measurement on the back of your wallpaper and cut to size with a pair of scissors (read the wallpaper label to determine the exact pattern repeat, to ensure that each sheet remains proportional to one another).
  3. Next, wash your steps to make sure they are free of any dust or debris.
  4. Apply a thin coat of primer to each stair riser and let dry. This helps the wallpaper stick to the surface better as well as makes it easier to remove later.
  5. If you are using an unpasted wallpaper, apply a thin coat of paste to each stair. Next, press the wallpaper onto each stair riser and even into place with a smoothing tool. If you are using a prepasted wallpaper, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on the correct booking time, and then use the same steps from above to apply.
  6. Wait until the wallpaper has completely dried, while making sure to wipe away any excess paste with a sponge.
  7. Lastly, apply a thin coat of glaze to protect your stairs from future wear and tear.

1. A potpourri of pretty: Each of the above shelves is completely unique but they all have one thing in common: diversity. Mix and match books with candles, shells, framed art and family photographs, small statues, curiosity items, ceramics, plants… whatever you have collected that you love! As long as you don’t overcrowd your shelves, you should be able to find a balance that showcases your style with panache!

2. Arrange, then step back… and Re-arrange: Your shelves can be an evolving art installation, changing as you acquire new things to display, or to accomodate for fun seasonal decor items, or just to refresh the look of your room! Try arranging everything, then studying the overall look before re-approaching the shelf to make final adjustments.

3. Keep a Secret Stash: be honest with yourself about the fact that some things might end up on the shelf that do not necessarily merit being on display. Most of us have a lot of stuff and might have a tendency to toss mail, remotes, receipts, trinkets, keepsakes, etc. onto our shelves. It helps to have an attractive basket or box in your display mix so that you can stash less than lovely items with ease.

Polishing the Perfect Wall: Why You Should Bring Your Favorite Summer Nail Shades to Walls

2535-20674_Room

The Tom Ford Summer Collection is a perfect match to this modern wallpaper that fuses a vibrant red, soft orange and warm beige for a sizzling brilliance on walls.

Most of us wait all year for those first signs of summer…warmth, sunshine, long beach days, colorful sunsets and updating ones wardrobe from drab winter tones to fresh, happy shades, including switching out that dark nail tone for a more vivid alternative. So why not do the same with your décor?

DL30454_Room

A bright pink and orange shade as seen in the Essie Summer Collection, matched with its ivory and grey counterparts, make these energetic colors appear light and airy on walls.

If you’re afraid of adding to much color, or worried about how these electrifying shades will actually appear on walls, consider creating a feature wall as an alternative. This gives you the freedom to pick a bold design while making sure your room doesn’t appear too busy or chaotic.

2535-20609_Room

Consider pairing a fearless red with a coppery orange as seen in Butter London’s collection, for a wonderful mix of color and sass.

Dior’s colors of summer bring a cool vibe to your space that is filled with ocean blues, sea glass greens and a fresh pop of pink. If you’re looking to create a relaxing retreat that soothes and inspires, this pretty palette does just the trick.

DL30467_Room

Dior’s colors of summer

From pastel pinks to a punch of peach to a lush grassy green, Zoya’s summer shades invigorate décor in tones that are calm and friendly. With a dash of contemporary flavor, this rich collection will bring effortless detail to walls.

CHR11671_Room

Perfectly mastered, Zoya’s six dazzling shades are ideal for any wall in your home

You may not have thought that polishing nails and polishing walls in the same hue would ever be something you would consider, however just like the changing of seasons, refreshing décor in a warm summer palette can easily change the mood of your room from bleak to vibrant and boring to magical!

Oh So Faux

White Washed Wood Wall Mural by Komar

White Washed Wood Wall Mural by Komar

We recently stayed in a very hip hotel in NYC hotel where all of the halls were wrapped in a rich espresso brown ostrich skin. Of course, this chic and luxurious look was not accomplished with real ostrich skin, that would have been an atrocity! The design was done with a faux effect wallpaper, one that authentically created the organic beauty of an exotic leather with PETA approved tactics. Achieving a faux effect with wallpaper is often much easier and less costly way to get the decor look you desire, without sacrificing any of the texture, color or architectural impact. Having walls wrapped in leather – even rare animal skins like crocodile or snake skin is very modern and striking. Revamping walls with a completely new material, like tile, rustic wood, stones or brick can also be achieved well with wallpaper. With rich textured embosses, lavish printing techniques and artistic ink finishes, an exceptional wallpaper can create a completely new identity for your walls. Wallpaper is the fabric of your homes outfit, and it is not limited to patterns like flowers, stripes and damasks. These faux wallpapers are easy to install and oh-so-chic.
