Designing a Den with Retro Mod Appeal

A Mad Men Inspired Decor

Don’t you just love the word den? It has such a cozy connotation. A den can be a mix between a living room and an office, and it also can serve as a man cave. When decorating in a den, you want to be sure that the furnishings are an inviting mix of comfort and style. Our dream den du jour would have a Mad Men feel, where mid century modern elements mixed with traditional pieces in a rich palette of reds and golds and deep wood finishes.
Mad Men Inspired Den Retro Mod Man Cave with Vintage Picks from Chairish

We created a style board for our den featuring an eclectic mix of old and new. Have you heard of Chairish? It is an online consignment shop where design-obsessed people can buy and sell exceptional pre-owned home furnishings. It is a fabulous place to find authentic vintage furniture and search for groovy one-of-a-kind pieces. How fabulous is that vintage 1940s slipper chair?! We found it on Chairish, along with all of the other vintage items in this board. With a low, mid century modern dresser as a credenza, and the Atheneum Antique Books wallpaper from the Oxford Mens wallpaper collection, the room has a distinguished air of intellect and sophistication. The traditional Persian rug adds a layer of comfort and global chic warmth. For accessories we chose a  vintage George Nelson walnut spike wall clock and a brass globe, both from Chairish as well. The library style floor lamp looks like it could be vintage but it is from Jonathan Adler’s new lighting collection. Finallhy, the potted ficus brings a fresh touch of life to the room so that the space will never feel lonely. Below are a few more dens that we love for inspiration!

Color and Home Decor Trends from Maison et Objet

Decor Ideas and Color Trends 2014

This September, the theme at Maison et Objet was Sharing. This uplifting theme explores the new ways that we grow as a creative community, networking and collaborating through the generous share and like icons of the digital age. We love this positive perspective on how our modern lives can benefit from the social tools of the digital world. As always, the designs at this Paris show wowed with a global mix of gorgeous colors, textures, styles, inspirations and innovations.

Organic Wood: Wood has always been a building staple, it is truly a timeless material. However, trends of the day reveal their tendencies in the finish of the wood, whether it is painted, stained, dark, rustic, or glossy. This year natural and unfinished wood, especially in light colors, as well as distressed and vintage wood looks dominated decor exhibits at Maison.

Heavy Metal and Warm Copper: Gleaming metals were adding an embellished brilliance to furniture, walls, objets d’art, lighting and tableware. Bronze and copper were especially prominent, bringing a burnished tawny glow to all sorts of lovely items. We have observed copper hues trending for a few seasons now, and the movement has continued to grow with luminous success.

Typography & Words: An important theme, one focused on by Maison et Objet themselves, is the notion of letters and words as art. “Writing is becoming a pictorial object that is filling spaces, surfaces and materials. Graphic and typographic effects are writing a feast of words that communicates with poetry and meaning and revives our social bonds” -Elizabeth Leriche This creative expression in the face of advancing digital lives can be seen in typography, and hand-written words as prints and artistic embellishments.

Color Spirit: The colors that captivated designers this year included an abundance of pretty midtone pastels with pops of bright accents like chartreuse. Blue and white were also especially prominent. Shibori indigo, delft porcelain blue, and vivid cobalt paired with crisp whites added a fresh yet classic contrast to walls, textiles, ceramics, accessories and floors.

Industrial Chic: Playing on the popularity of upcycling and DIY decor, distressed textures and factory inspired items were mixed in with gorgeous designs for a gritty-chic edge. Packing crates and practical items, like lockers, tools, and exposed light bulbs were found in unexpected design layouts for a touch of rebellion against convention. The items were often embellished with a fresh coat of paint or a metallic touch, accenting their raw industrial forms with a splashy detail. The winner of the Maison et Objet designer of the Year, in fact, was Tom Dixon, an industrial designer rose to fame with welded salvage furniture and “instantaneous factory” inspired designs.

Fall Color Report: Warm Cognac

Walls to couches, skirts, coats and headboards, cognac adds a warm energy to fashion as well as home décor (images from top left: Pantone.com, Pottery Barn, Brewster Home Fashions, Milk Magazine, Pinterest & Style.com)

Where brown is seen as dull, cognac is seen as glamorous! This warm, classy hue brings to mind autumnal bliss, where colorful leaves, cozy knits and days spent by the fire all lay at the forefront of our minds. So it’s no surprise that this toasty shade, reminding us of not only a steaming cup of coffee but our favorite pair of leather boots, has won a place on the Fall 2014 Pantone Fashion Color Report.

A perfect pair to so many colors, you might even call it a neutral! It has the ability to make black seem not so harsh, while also being able to bring out the true beauty of a vibrant red without making it too overbearing (as seen above). There are not many colors you can truly say this about, that can work so fluently alongside others while also being able to stand alone brilliantly!

What is seen in fashion can also transition over to the home décor market. From warm leather sofas, stand out headboards, vintage accessories and cultured brown walls, cognac creates an interior that is stylish and chic as well as pleasant and enjoyable to live in. Whether it is the main focus of a room or subtle addition, adding in touch of this feel-good color provides your home with a comfortable living space.

The beauty of Cognac, is that it seems to break all the rules. It not only compliments black, but it looks great with white, even better with color, and yes, it even looks fabulous on its own! This is definitely one color we can get used to!

How to Book Wallpaper

If you have never wallpapered before, or if you have only used the paste-the-wall method of wallpaper application, then chances are you might not be familiar with why or how to book wallpaper. “Booking” wallpaper is a decorating industry term that means allowing your wallpaper to rest for a period of time while the paper has a chance to expand and contract. It prevents your seams from separating. Here is a quick video of how to book unpasted wallpaper. For instructions on booking pre-pasted wallpaper read on below.

Wallpaper is either pre-pasted or unpasted. If your wallpaper is unpasted and you are using the paste-the-wall method, then you do not need to book your wallpaper. If your wallpaper is pre-pasted, submerge the strip in water to activate the paste. If your wallpaper is unpasted, you can also “book” each strip after applying the glue to make sure that the moisture from the glue application does not cause the strip to expand and later contract, creating a visible gap in between strips.

After wetting the paper, or applying the paste, gently fold both ends of the strip, paste side in, towards the center, without creasing the folds. You should see the pattern facing out. Consult the manufacturers instructions for how long to allow your wallpaper to rest, typically it is between 5 and 10 minutes.
