Welcome Marsala into Your Home

Tips for Achieving On-Trend Designs Using the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year

Marsala Pantone Color of the Year 2015

Marsala, the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year, is a rich and complex hue that seamlessly blends both regal and earthy elements. The new Pantone color is named after the fortified wine that complements the most satisfying of meals, and with minimal effort, incorporating Marsala in the home can make any space feel cozy and on-trend.

“Marsala is unique in its versatility,” says Paula Berberian, our Creative Director. “While previous Pantone colors of the year like Radiant Orchid and Emerald added a bold element to home interiors, Marsala is a grounding force that is subtle enough to pair with both dramatic and muted design schemes.” Below, Berberian shares her tips for incorporating Marsala in your home to create a chic and cohesive look.

Embrace the Earthiness “The red-brown undertones in Marsala serve as the ideal accent for earthy accessories,” notes Berberian.  “From reclaimed wood shelving to bowls filled with beechwood, decorating with natural elements is both affordable and aesthetically pleasing,” adds Berberian. Marsala is an grounded hue, with beautiful purple and red undertones.

Get Playful with Prints Traditional prints are making a major comeback thanks to updated interpretations inspired by cultures far and wide. Although toile was originally introduced in the 18th Century, the print continues to exude a regal air, especially when executed in rich Marsala. Above, a vintage print is updated with modern scale and a beautiful marsala palette.

Tie in Textures “Utilizing interesting textures throughout the home can make your design feel more curated and personal,” says Berberian. Although textured accessories like throw pillows and woven rugs create coziness, an intricate wall covering can either give the illusion of texture through pattern or add real feel depending on the materials. Wall décor can add an upscale element to intimate spaces like the bedroom or living room. Above, fun geometrics lend a modern flair to Marsalas rich coloring. Rustic hardwood paneling, such as the Heim Brown Distressed Wood Panel from Brewster Home Fashions, creates warmth in unexpected spaces like the bathroom or mudroom, and organic details further elevate the design.

A Fresh Palette of Color Trends for the New Year

MarsalaEach year we look forward to a new set of emerging colors to guide fashion, accessories and home decor. This year we have been reveling in a vivid and inspiring palette, dominated by the Pantone 2014 color of the year, Radiant Orchid. Looking ahead to Spring 2015, when the runways light up with fresh trends and fun themes for the year ahead, we see a palette of softer shades on the horizon. The color of the Year for 2015 has been declared Marsala, named for the rich Italian wine. The hue is warm and comforting, with earthy undertones of red wine. It is elegant, tasteful, and translates well to a wide array of sophisticated accents for the home, design and fashion textiles. Learn more about this grounded and welcoming hue from the Pantone color experts themselves.

Have you ever wondered “who picks these colors, anyways? What gives them the right to declare the hottest colors of the future?” Well, its a fair question, but it is amazing how the true color experts have made color trend prediction into a science. They study design movements from around the globe and work with groups of talented and creative thought leaders to come up with a surprisingly accurate picture of emerging color patterns. Here is the rest of the Pantone palette, followed by the predictions from the Trend Theme committee at Heimtextil 2015. Note the consistency of soft, natural hues with attractive neutrals and the same rich blue – and of course marsala! Coincidence? We think not.

The palette is influenced by layered vegetable dyes for new natural shades and the refreshing simplicity of stepping outside into “plain air”. These speak to an escape from the stress of overly-complex, hyper connected technology of modern life. Soft hues soothe the mind and create a sanctuary. Many of the colors are named for whole foods, like strawberry, and toasted almond.

Color and Home Decor Trends from Maison et Objet

Decor Ideas and Color Trends 2014

This September, the theme at Maison et Objet was Sharing. This uplifting theme explores the new ways that we grow as a creative community, networking and collaborating through the generous share and like icons of the digital age. We love this positive perspective on how our modern lives can benefit from the social tools of the digital world. As always, the designs at this Paris show wowed with a global mix of gorgeous colors, textures, styles, inspirations and innovations.

Organic Wood: Wood has always been a building staple, it is truly a timeless material. However, trends of the day reveal their tendencies in the finish of the wood, whether it is painted, stained, dark, rustic, or glossy. This year natural and unfinished wood, especially in light colors, as well as distressed and vintage wood looks dominated decor exhibits at Maison.

Heavy Metal and Warm Copper: Gleaming metals were adding an embellished brilliance to furniture, walls, objets d’art, lighting and tableware. Bronze and copper were especially prominent, bringing a burnished tawny glow to all sorts of lovely items. We have observed copper hues trending for a few seasons now, and the movement has continued to grow with luminous success.

Typography & Words: An important theme, one focused on by Maison et Objet themselves, is the notion of letters and words as art. “Writing is becoming a pictorial object that is filling spaces, surfaces and materials. Graphic and typographic effects are writing a feast of words that communicates with poetry and meaning and revives our social bonds” -Elizabeth Leriche This creative expression in the face of advancing digital lives can be seen in typography, and hand-written words as prints and artistic embellishments.

Color Spirit: The colors that captivated designers this year included an abundance of pretty midtone pastels with pops of bright accents like chartreuse. Blue and white were also especially prominent. Shibori indigo, delft porcelain blue, and vivid cobalt paired with crisp whites added a fresh yet classic contrast to walls, textiles, ceramics, accessories and floors.

Industrial Chic: Playing on the popularity of upcycling and DIY decor, distressed textures and factory inspired items were mixed in with gorgeous designs for a gritty-chic edge. Packing crates and practical items, like lockers, tools, and exposed light bulbs were found in unexpected design layouts for a touch of rebellion against convention. The items were often embellished with a fresh coat of paint or a metallic touch, accenting their raw industrial forms with a splashy detail. The winner of the Maison et Objet designer of the Year, in fact, was Tom Dixon, an industrial designer rose to fame with welded salvage furniture and “instantaneous factory” inspired designs.

Where brown is seen as dull, cognac is seen as glamorous! This warm, classy hue brings to mind autumnal bliss, where colorful leaves, cozy knits and days spent by the fire all lay at the forefront of our minds. So it’s no surprise that this toasty shade, reminding us of not only a steaming cup of coffee but our favorite pair of leather boots, has won a place on the Fall 2014 Pantone Fashion Color Report.

A perfect pair to so many colors, you might even call it a neutral! It has the ability to make black seem not so harsh, while also being able to bring out the true beauty of a vibrant red without making it too overbearing (as seen above). There are not many colors you can truly say this about, that can work so fluently alongside others while also being able to stand alone brilliantly!

What is seen in fashion can also transition over to the home décor market. From warm leather sofas, stand out headboards, vintage accessories and cultured brown walls, cognac creates an interior that is stylish and chic as well as pleasant and enjoyable to live in. Whether it is the main focus of a room or subtle addition, adding in touch of this feel-good color provides your home with a comfortable living space.
